Package: defoma
Version: 0.11.8
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm not sure what package to file this bug against; 'defoma' is a shot in
the dark.

The problem is that in some X applications, e.g. 'gv' or 'amaya', some text
elements are not being displayed - for example, the menus. All the menu
items are there and they are selectable, but the letters are invisible.

Unfortunately, I know of no way to find out what X font an application is
requesting from the server, so more guesswork was involved. After a while,
however, I found that -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-100-* contains only
'empty characters'. If I select this font in e.g. xftontsel, the sample text
disappears. The strange thing is that the only foundry that has this font is
adobe, and when I select -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-100-*, the
display is correct.

It seems to be the ptSz value that does the voodoo: as long as I don't touch
it, the letters are there. I made this little table about which value works
and which doesn't:

-*-	OK
-80-	bad
-90-	OK
-100-	bad
-120-	bad
-140-	bad
-180-	bad
-240-	bad

I have the following packages installed that may be related to the problem:

I tried to remove most of them to see if anything happened, but there was no
effect (other than that most of the other text on my desktop was replaced by
little squares after a while). What was most strange was that I couldn't get
rid of the Helvetica font. It kept showing up in xfontsel even after I
removed xfonts-{100,75}dpi* which seemed to be the packages that supplied
it (naturally, I did restart the font server and even the X server each
time).

I am at a loss as to what else to try.
