struct.error: byte format requires -128 <= number <= 127
Right, it should be "B" (unsigned byte, 0..255) not "b" (signed byte, -128..+127). Python 2.6 tolerated overflows in struct.pack (with deprecation warnings), but Python 2.7 throws an exception instead.
