I'm going to nudge up the severity of this bug.
I think this is a "problem which _does_ affect the package's usefulness" 
and therefore is not a minor bug.

Stinit is the only way to set the st device driver modes and 
default debian kernels have st as a module. So the default debian mt-st 
package should have working hooks to run stinit when the module is loaded.

Not being an expert on this I guess either a modprobe.d rule or a udev 
rule would be the place to put this.
