Thanks. You are right. The ipw2200 driver needs a firmware that has a
license that probably does not fulfill the debian license.

The firmware can be downloaded from
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php

the main page for the driver and info is:
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net

for debian etch beta 2, the ipw2200 version is 1.0.8, and the required
firmware version is 2.4. The file ipw2200-fw-2.4.tgz should be
downloaded and untarred on /lib/firmware

(I think some similar info could be displayed to the user during the
installation phase if the ipw2200 driver is installed)

I have found also another bug submission referring to the same problem:
Debian Bug report logs-#322332: ipw2000-source: fails to load firmware

After reboot, the driver seems working nicely, however, I had to
manually run
# iwconfig eth2 essid MY_ESSID mode Managed key MY_HEX_KEY

to make it run, and then
#dhclient

How can I configure to make all these things automatically at boot time
(or automatically when the wireless switch is enabled)?

By the way, the kernel issues the next message during boot if the switch
is down:
"ipw2200: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:"
"Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work."
which is the opposite message to what should be:
"The swich is off. It must be turned on ..."

By the way, X-Windows screen resolution is not properly set. In the
xorg.conf file was missed the following lines in the "monitor" section:
HorizSync 30-65
VertRefresh 50-75
I just figure out these values ...

It also seems like if the sound card is not working ...

thank you very much
Vicente
