I was biten by the --tag mess while running 
$  libtool --mode=compile   g++-4.0  ....
so I read all this bug report and found out
$  libtool --mode=compile --tag=CXX  g++-4.0  ....

you may document the  --tag  option  in the man page (that is not GFDL
