OK, here's the "solution":
The comcom command.com provided by dosemu is buggy. It doesn't work
at all WRT the environment and unix -s.
Replacing it with FreeCom does fix the problem. My Sid machine is now
working now it's using a properly installed freecom (there was a
problem with its installation with vspawn.com). However, I haven't
had success with every version of FreeCom. Some appear to be buggy in
the same manner as comcom.
So I think I'm sorted WRT getting a working setup, but I think
replacing comcom with FreeCom in Debian would be a Good Thing. I'll
go through the available FreeCom versions and see which work and which
don't.
