The logdirs created by metalog in /var/log should be owned by the group 
group 'admin', they  should have read and search permission for this group.

The logfiles in should be group 'admin', they should have read permission
for members of this group.

This package has been removed from Debian unstable because it was
unmaintained, old and according to the maintainer quite obsolte and
useless.
