Well, how about it?  Status quo is no good:

  # dpkg -i mailutils_20020904-2_i386.deb
  Selecting previously deselected package mailutils.

  Adding `diversion of /usr/bin/frm to /usr/bin/frm.elm-me+ by mailutils'
  dpkg: error processing mailutils_20020904-2_i386.deb (--install):
   trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/messages', which is also in package elm-me+
  dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
