I can't tell you exactly - I was regurgitating the official statements.
But I can tell you that the Plone project runs their stuff through
Jenkins, sporting a test suite containing some 7000-9000 tests (I forgot
the exact number), and I guess that the output of these test runs will
have had some influence on said official statements.
Also, Zope, and especially the ZODB, are sometimes doing tricky things
that are viewed as close to black magic. Subtle changes in the way
Python behaves, could very conceivably have significant impact on this
software.

Afaik, that's the reason why there's currently no way to run Zope on
Python 3.x, but I think they're working on it.
For the details of what works and what not, I would like to refer you to
eg. Matthew Wilkes, who lives in the Bristol area, and who has quite
some more insight into this stuff than I do.
