recognizing Lenovo, etc.
(using my work email for my convenience; please always keep dsa@debian.org carbon copied so that my DSA colleagues are kept apprised of our conversation)
Hi Debian Publicity and Partners teams,
DSA has been upgrading hardware in our various locations, recently. Specifically, in 2024, we are upgrading Debian equipment at UBC (Vancouver, Canada) and installing new equipment at a new hosting provider (Oslo, Norway). We have been / will be purchasing equipment from Lenovo and HPE.
It is time to recognize Lenovo for the generous preferential pricing that they have extended to Debian. Lenovo has been a great partner to Debian in recent years, sponsoring many recent DebConfs (https://debconf24.debconf.org gold sponsor), offering discounts to Debian Developers (https://wiki.debian.org/MemberBenefits), and, now, very significant discounts on server hardware.
I'm about to start a thread with you folks and the Lenovo senior account executive, Steven (Steve) Branch, regarding recognizing Lenovo on the Debian Partners page and in one of two press releases (one now for the hardware at UBC, and another several months from now for the hardware in Oslo). An example of a previous press release (recognizing HPE that time) is https://www.debian.org/News/2016/20161003. I'm thinking of something similar, now.
The purpose of this email is to provide you with an opportunity ask me questions before I send that introduction email to Steve.
Thanks,
Luca
PS: I will also be asking UBC and the new hosting provider whether they wish to be recognized for the gratis hosting that they provide, which is more valuable than the hardware discounts, frankly. UBC, my employer, has been hosting a significant percentage of Debian infrastructure for over 20 years. Finally, if HPE offers significant discounts on hardware, we will likely want to recognize them.
PPS: I have carbon copied Daniel Lange since we discussed the possible future direction of Partners, recently. Until that future is put in place, the above is what I'd like to do for Lenovo, HPE, maybe UBC, maybe new hosting partner.
