If you don't want to count this yourself based on LDAP, the best
option is nm.d.o:

Total number of Debian members including ex-members according to LDAP:

$ ldapsearch -ZLLL -x -h db.debian.org -b ou=users,dc=debian,dc=org
supplementaryGid=Debian uid | grep ^uid: | wc -l
1892

We don't, the website hard-codes that number and it hasn't been
updated since 2002.

Presumably it means developers in the "DDs" or Debian members sense,
so it isn't counting Debian contributors either:
