there anything in particular you're looking for more info about?

Yup, that sounds entirely reasonable. A GUI would be useless (for me,
anyway) as the CDs are built on a remote machine and I don't want to
have to download them all over my ADSL connection. Using functions to
do checks sounds good; I want this to be as easily extensible as
possible.
