The current (woody) installer and the configuration of XFree is not really that easy if you don't know a few basics about how unixy systems work, and a bit about what happens when a PC is booting. This is just what Debian is *now*. How Debian *should* be is another question again - and here I tend to agree with those that say Debian should be trying to be for everyone, not an 'elitist OS'.
