You can still create bugfixes and patches to improve the quality of the
package and submit them to the BTS, so everyone can seem them. If the
maintainer doesn't react on your mail, you can still contact the QA Team
and tell them about the situation and ask them to try to cotnact the
maintainer or do a NMU if needed.

Then you have still the possibility to ask the QA Team for help with
this issues and try to contact the maintainer to get a decision from
him. You still have one door left, that you haven't opened and where you
haven't looked what's behind.
