Package: hplip
Version: 3.22.6+dfsg0-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/hp-plugin

Trying to get a M479fdn to work, I found that hp-setup fails to download the plugin. It seems to contact an Akamai host using HEAD and that results in a "503 Service Unavailable". It then tries to get a plugin.conf file from sf.net, but that's using an outdated redirect:

% hp-plugin -ldebug -i #(1 pts/3) 12 22:08:48.356

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are
installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

If by M479fdn the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn is meant, this
device is fully supported by the printing system without HPLIP and
any non-free plugin being required. Please see

  https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting

The issue experienced is not unknown and is usually raised in the
context of user support. Twenty reports/year would not be unknown; in
fact I have seen two in the past few days.

The plugin may be downloaded from

  https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/

and installed with

  sh <DOWNLOADED_PLUGIN>

> Remote file does not exist -- broken link!!!

I am closing the report because

* Upstream appear to need to improve their infrastructure for delivering
  plugin files.
* There is an alternative, officially sanctioned way to obtain a plugin.

Regards,

Brian.
