I think this is the real problem. Testing a patch now.
When doing build-system surgery like commit d7ed869d, please remember to
test the build with separate build passes for Architecture: all and
Architecture: any packages (dpkg-buildpackage -A and -B, respectively),
not just a combined build, because the separate build passes are what
will happen on the buildds.
