Package: hplip Version: 3.20.3+dfsg0-2 The package seems to be compiled with debugging messages turned on, causing multi-megabyte output into /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages like the following sample lines when xscan, simple-scan, scanimage and probably others are used: Apr 19 15:29:26 knecht simple-scan: http.c 494: http_read len=19 datalen=0 data= Apr 19 15:29:26 knecht simple-scan: http.c 239: read_line len=15 index=690 cnt=23 Apr 19 15:29:26 knecht simple-scan: http.c 494: http_read len=15 datalen=0 data= Apr 19 15:29:26 knecht simple-scan: http.c 239: read_line len=23 index=0 cnt=0 Apr 19 15:29:26 knecht simple-scan: http.c 494: http_read len=23 datalen=0 data= Apr 19 15:29:36 knecht simple-scan: http.c 153: hpmud_read_channel failed retrying (2) more times) Apr 19 15:29:41 knecht simple-scan: http.c 153: hpmud_read_channel failed retrying (1) more times) Apr 19 15:29:46 knecht simple-scan: http.c 153: hpmud_read_channel failed retrying (0) more times) Apr 19 15:29:46 knecht simple-scan: http.c 189: -read_stream() bytes_read=0 s.index=0 s.cnt=0 stat=1 Apr 19 15:29:46 knecht simple-scan: http.c 239: read_line len=1 index=0 cnt=0 Apr 19 15:29:46 knecht simple-scan: http.c 506: -http_read() handle=0x7eff78088c00 data=0x7eff81e33c07 bytes_read=1560 size=5120 status=2 Apr 19 15:29:46 knecht simple-scan: bb_escl.c 911: bb_read_http_payload1 done (total=1560). Apr 19 15:29:46 knecht simple-scan: bb_escl.c 952: bb_read_http_payload completed. total=[1560] It seems that HTTP_DEBUG is defined in scan/sane/http.c. I have a HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w. This includes, btw, a 3-times-retry loop in read_stream that leads to a 15 second delay, as can be seen from the "hpmud_read_channel failed" messages. But this is a separate issue.
