I did quite a lot of scanning with my psc 1300 aio some time ago and
have a distinct recollection the resolution in xsane was presented as
a slider. So I gave in and installed squeeze. It was niggling at me.

 root@squeeze:~# scanimage --help -d hpaio:/usb/psc_1300_series?serial=HU3AFBQ28Y9F | grep resolution
     --resolution 75..600dpi [75]
         Sets the resolution of the scanned image.

That's a range, isn't it? hplip is 3.10.6-2+squeeze2.

Now - my understanding is that the backend (hpaio) gets data from the
device firmware. It is apparent here that the backend can also readjust
what it gets when presenting it to the frontend. The question is - why
do that?
