Package: hplip Version: 3.10.6-1 Severity: wishlist I have a server on my network that, among other things, runs a copy of cups for my DeskJet 5740. This allows people on the network to print over IPP. However, installing the hplip package brings in a huge number of dependencies that simply are not appropriate for a server, such as consolekit (since nobody is ever logged in at the console). I have the printer set up fine with hplip-cups and a PPD. However, if I temporarily install hplip (in order to run hp-clean or such), hp-clean does not work, which I presume is due to not using the hp backend. I'd prefer that you provide a way to maintain the printer on a server without involving the installation of huge amounts of useless (and potentially buggy) packages. It would be fine with me if I only needed to install hplip on a desktop or laptop connected to the network, as long as I didn't need to install it on the server. It would also be fine with me if I could install the utilities and relevant backend on the server without all the baggage[0] coming along. The information below is irrelevant since it belongs to my laptop, not my server. [0] That is, policykit and libsane. This is a server with a printer, not a desktop with an all-in-one. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.35-rc6-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages hplip depends on: ii adduser 3.112 add and remove users and groups ii coreutils 8.5-1 GNU core utilities ii cups 1.4.4-2 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii cups-client 1.4.4-2 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii hplip-cups 3.10.6-1 HP Linux Printing and Imaging - CU ii hplip-data 3.10.6-1 HP Linux Printing and Imaging - da ii libc6 2.11.2-2 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libcups2 1.4.4-2 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.24-2 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libhpmud0 3.10.6-1 HP Multi-Point Transport Driver (h ii libsane 1.0.21-3 API library for scanners ii libsane-hpaio 3.10.6-1 HP SANE backend for multi-function ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8o-1 SSL shared libraries ii lsb-base 3.2-23.1 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii policykit-1 0.96-2 framework for managing administrat ii python 2.6.5-10 interactive high-level object-orie ii python-dbus 0.83.1-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii python-imaging 1.1.7-2 Python Imaging Library ii python-pexpect 2.3-1 Python module for automating inter ii python-support 1.0.9 automated rebuilding support for P Versions of packages hplip recommends: ii avahi-daemon 0.6.27-1 Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD daemon ii sane-utils 1.0.21-3 API library for scanners -- utilit Versions of packages hplip suggests: pn hplip-doc <none> (no description available) pn hplip-gui <none> (no description available) pn kdeprint | gtklp | xpp <none> (no description available) ii python-notify 0.1.1-2+b2 Python bindings for libnotify -- no debconf information -- brian m. carlson / brian with sandals: Houston, Texas, US +1 832 623 2791 | http://www.crustytoothpaste.net/~bmc | My opinion only OpenPGP: RSA v4 4096b: 88AC E9B2 9196 305B A994 7552 F1BA 225C 0223 B187Attachment: signature.asc

No response from upstream. No additional prodding. We cannot carry this bug against an unsupported version of hplip for ever. Closing. Regards, Brian.
