In terms of gut-feeling / speculation, we have arrived at what was obvious to me when opening this bug.

The same lines get printed to syslog, so it does technically go through that, but it doesn't prevent the scanner from working with the printer URI.

That's exactly what I wrote before.
We're back to square one. Strings don't match. One of them needs to change. Or the normalization logic needs to change.
It's the old question: between hardware and driver, which one is inherently "wrong" by virtue of being what it is.
