We were hoping you would repeat your testing with at least the most
up-to-date Wheezy (1.5.3-5+deb7u5) or with cups from testing or unstable
on the *same* system.

The message "cupsctl: Unauthorized" looks like you are trying to connect
to a server for which you have no permission to do so. Do you have a
file client.conf in either /etc/cups or /root/.cups?

By the way: is "cupsctl: Unauthorized" what was displayed on the screen
or a translation of what you saw?
