I actually ran into this file just yesterday, while troubleshooting a misbehaving PDF file. These are the aliases recommended by http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/poppler/ to work around historical issues. The ZapfDingbats alias looks like a workaround for fdo#19128 (Debian #590487, LP: #130687). It's fixed upstream in fontconfig 2.9.0. The Symbol alias looks like a workaround for fdo#6478 (LP: #37745). It's fixed upstream in fontconfig 2.3.95. (I suspect that change actually introduced Debian #528808).
