I've been pointed at the fact that cups-browsed would very probably work in 
CUPS < 1.6 setups, in contradiction to what I wrote above. That said, this 
would not be very useful or practical to do in Debian, as it would need a 
cups-browsed backport (and other parts of the source would conflict). Also, 
it's probably saner to consider that the interoperability responsability lies 
in the new version setups, not in the older ones.

(Note that I would certainly not oppose a cups-browsed backport, just don't 
wait on me to do it. :) )
