Hi mark,

I just tested, I can successfully detect and setup my HP printer over USB 
here: it's therefor not a universal problem and will likely stay "important".

Sounds sane enough. Can you now run

# /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb 

as root and paste the result in the bugreport?
