Many thanks to you and Craig for helpful replies. Yes, that was it;
commenting out that line made things work. Perhaps it might be worth
including a note about this in the Debian README?

Incidentally, in order to make lprng work at all I had to add this to
/etc/modules, otherwise there was no /dev/lp0:

	parport_c
	lp

It took quite a bit of googling to discover this.
