Thanks for a clear report.  Would it be possible to send an example of a
(gzipped) DVI file and the resulting PDF suffering from this?  Perhaps
ghostscript's PDF driver is producing invalid PDFs or unnecessarily
invoking a rarely used feature, so it would be nice to be able to track
this down.
