Today, when I was trying to upgrade some packages, the update stopped and printed "Password for root on localhost?" The prompt did not respond to Ctrl-C or Ctrl-\, but pressing Enter made it continue. There's really no reason to ask for the root password since by definition an upgrade with apt is done as root.
