Bug#613912: ghostscript ships its own fonts in libgs9-common, additionally depends on gsfonts

Not anymore. IIRC starting with Ghostscript 8.60 (i.e. the one that combined the AFPL, GPL and ESP versions) the ghostscript release tarball also included the fonts in Ressource/Font (the ones that were only available as a separate download before). So strictly speaking, this was the moment when one of both font sets became obsolete.

That's what I am talking about: The Ghostscript project includes all needed resources as part of a single tarball instead of as isolated chunks.

I agree, however, with the message between the lines of your question: There is no _sensible_ reason :-)

There is currently a discussion on gs-devel to merge the urwcyr 1.0.7pre44 fonts that Debian ships in their gsfonts package into the fonts that ghostscript ships: <http://ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-devel/2011-February/008891.html>

So maybe this problem is solved upstream and Debian can finally stop shipping two slightly different font sets in its ghostscript and gsfonts packages.

I agree we should clean this up. I disagree we should drop the separate packaging of the fonts!

The Ghostscript project do not develop fonts, I believe, just maintain them as a collection, for convenience of consistency in builds and testing of their own code.

Debian has a different objective. And I believe it is better to track them as a separate entity - a separate upstream project. Even if it might turn out that the current canonical upstream source for a while is that same tarball which also holds Ghostscript. Because that might very well change again in the future!
