Package: gs-esp
Version: 7.07.1-9
Severity: normal

When trying to print a certain PDF file (which I will try to send as an answer to
this bug report) with

acroread 7.0-0.9 0 from ftp://ftp.nerim.net

and

gs-esp 7.07.1-9

I get the following error message:

gs -q -dSAFER -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=$out{/home-teamix/print.pdf} -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -c .setpdfwrite -f
'/tmp/Acro000UFVDwn' : execution failed with message:

Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

When trying to print the same PDF file with KPDF instead it works okay.

The bugreport

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=15887

seems to indicate that this is solved by installing cups-pdf. I tried
this but it didn't help.

The bugreport

http://www.cups.org/espgs/str.php?L230+P0+S0+C0+I40+E1+Q

seems to indicate that this problem can be solved with a newer gs-esp
release.

Thus I tried with a backport of gs-esp 8+8.15rc4.dfsg.1-2 for sarge
(made by Norbert Tretkowski from backports.org).

Using this backport with Adobe Reader as of above gives me a different
error message:

gs -q -dSAFER -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=$out{/home-teamix/print.pdf} -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -c .setpdfwrite -f

Strangely enough on my own laptop running a mixture of etch and sid, upgrading
gs-esp from 7.07.1-9 to 8.15-4 once this fixed the problem. It was also fixed
when I downgraded to 7.07.1-9 again. I tried to find differences in the setup
that could cause that behaviour, but I didn't find any.

Today I tested again and the problem reappeared. I again updated to gs
8+8.15rc4.dfsg.1-2 (from sid) and then the problem did not disappear as before,
instead it showed exactly the same error message with "/undefinedfilenam"
as before I upgraded to the newer gs-esp.

I have no clue as to what is going on there. I can do further testing and
report further configuration details on request.
