Bug#590163: Changes in foomatic-db

Note also that PPDs for most HP printers are not provided by the OpenPrinting database and therefore not provided by foomatic-db any more for longer time. This is because HP ships their PostScript PPDs with the HPLIP package and maintains them there (and I do not want to ship redundant and unmaintained PPDs in foomatic-db). So these PPDs are provided by our hplip package, in the binary package hplip-data.

So for your HP printer you should install hplip or at least hplip-data so that you get HP's most current PPD file for your printer.

Note that from the next hplip package on the PPDs will also be compressed. hplip-data will then provide only the /usr/lib/cups/driver/hplip file and not the individual PPDs any more. Then you have to proceed as in my first comment to set up your printer.

Savings in the next hplip-data package will be as follows:

Binary Package *.deb file installed system
------------------------------------------------------------
hplip-data ~4 MB ~26 MB
