For me, upgrading python to 2.6 was not an option as too many other 
packages I used depended on earlier python, so I downgraded my hplip
related packages to:

hpijs_3.10.5-1_i386.deb
hpijs-ppds_3.10.5-1_all.deb
hplip_3.10.5-1_i386.deb
hplip-cups_3.10.5-1_i386.deb
hplip-data_3.10.5-1_all.deb
hplip-doc_3.10.5-1_all.deb
hplip-gui_3.10.5-1_all.deb
libhpmud0_3.10.5-1_i386.deb

using snapshot.debian.org to obtain the files then installing them with:

ls *.deb|grep hp|xargs dpkg -i
