Bug#586692: Cups website does not allow adding of paralell printer despite /dev/lp0 being present

I have the same issue here with a Brother HL5140 connected to the parallel port.
/var/log/syslog contains:

the second set of lines is printed when cups is started.
If I open the cups admin interface at http://localhost:631/admin and try to add
printers the following lines are printed to /var/log/cups/error_log:
