Package: hplip Version: 2.8.6.b-4 Severity: important I have installed an HP all-in-one (PSC2110) on Debian Lenny. I installed a printer queue using the CUPS web interface. Printing works alright, but the following problems occur: 1. Scanning does not work: xsane reports "No devices available". 2. hp-toolbox always reports: "Device communication error". After adding my user account to group "scanner", both problems do not occur any more. I think you cannot expect an unexperienced Linux user to find this work around. This bug report resembles #522848, but it is for another version of hplip and the solution is probably different too. In this version it is not necessary for the user to member of group "lp", but it is necessary to be member of group "scanner". For completeness, I include here the output of my "id -a", after having added my account to group "scanner": uid=1000(wim) gid=1000(wim) groups=20(dialout),24(cdrom),25(floppy), 29(audio),44(video),46(plugdev),103(scanner),110(netdev),115(powerdev), 1000(wim) -- Package-specific info: warning: Invalid ppd_dir value: None error: SIP not installed or version not found. error: Version: (Not available. CUPS may not be installed or not running.) warning: NOT FOUND! This is an OPTIONAL/RUNTIME ONLY dependency. Some HPLIP functionality may not function properly. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run. 3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
