Package: cups
Version: 1.4.2-5
Severity: important

Actually I'm not sure if the problem is with cups or ghostscript. Basically anything
I try to print with the lp or lpr commands that isn't a PostScript or PDF file (e.g.
a PNG image) appears briefly on the print queue, and then disappears without anything
coming out of my printer (an Epson R800 connected via USB).

Checking with dmesg, I invariably discover that ghostscript has segfaulted, e.g.

[263609.469966] gs[8089]: segfault at 7fff1a30e000 ip 00007f07280937db sp 00007fff1a309d88 error 6 in libc-2.10.2.so[7f0728017000+14a000]

I rebuilt ghostscript from the source .deb with debug symbols, and installed my version
as /usr/bin/gs-orig and also replacing /usr/lib/libgs.so.8.70. I substituted /usr/bin/gs
with a small stub program that sleeps for 30 seconds (long enough for me to attach to it with
gdb) before execing /usr/bin/gs-orig, and discovered in this way that the crash is happening
on line 146 in the source file ./psi/iscan.c, in the routine dynamic_save where it calls
memcpy. This is in turn called from line 1061, inside the scan_token routine in the same
source file. After the crash, further stack frames in the backtrace are simply reported
as hundreds and hundreds of instances of the address 0xffffffffffffffff, which suggests that
the stack has been clobbered.

GUI apps (e.g. Iceweasel, OpenOffice.org) all seem to generate PostScript for printing,
so they aren't affected by this.

Let me know if you need more info, want me to do further investigations with gdb etc.
