Package: cups
Version: 1.3.10-2
Severity: important

Hi!

After some post-lenny cups upgrade, I noticed that all my Debian testing
(squeeze) boxes fail to print correctly with the HP LaserJet 1320.
Printed documents show little spurious horizontal lines, especially
on font glyphs (e.g.: character 'i' looks like 'ī').
I had never seen issues like this on a laser printer before: the result
is similar to what you could get with a bad ink jet printer when the
ink nozzles are dirty!

Please note that this issue shows up both with direct parallel connection
and with network connection.

Other laser PostScript printers work correctly from the same Debian
testing boxes.
The same HP LaserJet 1320 printer works correctly when used from
other boxes which run older versions of CUPS on other older GNU/Linux
distros.
The same HP LaserJet 1320 printer used to work correctly a few cups
upgrades ago.
Downgrading to cups/1.3.8-1lenny4.1 solves the problem (N.B.: I only
need to downgrade the binary package named "cups").

Please find attached:

 * gzipped /etc/cups/printers.conf
 * gzipped /var/log/cups/error_log (with "debug" log level during a
   print test)
 * gzipped PPD file used for the printer (it was downloaded long ago from
   http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/PPD/HP/mono_laser/HP_LaserJet_1320_Series.ppd)

as requested in /usr/share/doc/cups/HOWTO_BUGREPORT.txt

Please help, this bug is really troublesome: severity set to "important"
since it is a regression.

I've just tested out cups/1.3.11-1 (which has recently migrated to
testing). Both plain text and PDF printing seem to work correctly now.

As a consequence, I am closing this bug report as fixed in version
1.3.11-1.
Thanks to Tomáš for trying to help out! :-)

Bye.
