Hi there!

Cc:ing bug #500732 as well, since IMHO they are the same. Also bcc:ing
all the people involved in both bugs, sorry for the spam.

The situation: in the lab where I work, there is a central print server
which shares printers through Avahi/Zeroconf to Windows XP and Mac OS X
Leopard clients. I found this bug because I could not get the Windows
XP clients to print recto-verso on two different HP printers, a LaserJet
4200n with the duplex unit and a Color LaserJet CP3525dn. At the same
time, however, the Mac OS X clients can print without any problem.

NB, while Mac OS X automatically recognizes the printer model and uses
the PPD installed on the CUPS print server, on Windows XP I used the
Apple Bonjour for Windows software to install the printers. By default,
the HP Color LaserJet 4550 PS driver (HP4550_6.PPD v7.21.200) is used as
"Generic / PostScript". To avoid all errors caused by this driver, I
installed the drivers specific to each printer, with no success. I
obtained similar failures with the generic Adobe PostScript driver as
well as the Microsoft Publisher Color Printer and Imagesetter ones.

I tested all the suggestion I found on both bugs and here my reports.

This works perfectly for Windows XP clients, but then the Mac OS X ones
cannot print recto-verso anymore, which IMHO is normal since there is no
filter processing.

Settings a raw printer in CUPS lets the Windows XP clients to correctly
print recto-verso. On Mac OS X, by default it does not work, because it
configures the printer as Generic PostScript, thus there is no duplex
option. However, if you choose the correct PPD at printer installation
it works as expected, but then there is no point in using Avahi/Zeroconf
printers.

Thx, bye,
