Bug#487647: [Pkg-cups-devel] Bug#487647: cupsys/1.3.7-7 startup script broken if old script is kept.

How do you mean? The preinst script tries to move the old
/etc/init.d/cupsys to /etc/init.d/cups, it does not symlink anything.
Did you set a symlink yourself?

Weird, the symlinks in /etc/rc*.d/SXXcups -> /etc/init.d/cups
shouldn't have anything to do with the actual conffile contents.

Can you please give the output of 

  ls -l /etc/init.d/cups* /etc/rc*/*cups*
