Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.4-3
Severity: normal

The printable area is suboptimal (about 2mm too small for DIN A4) in the
printer drivers (e.g. LaserJet.ppd) and filters (e.g. rastertohp).
This problem is also mentioned in the FAQ at http://www.cups.org.
However, in this FAQ it is only said that you have to update the drivers
and filters to set more appropriate page margins, but it does not say how
this is done. Since rastertohp is a binary, it is evident that this
requires editing of the sources. No average user will be able to do this.
The problem is especially severe for German users because of the following
situation:
If you use the LaTeX package g-brief for your letters, the printout with
lpr or lprng on DIN A4 is perfect. If you install cups the whole layout is
shifted upwards for 2 mm. If you correct this by setting '\VorschubV = 2.0mm'
in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/g-brief/g-brief.cls, the layout has exactly
the same position on a DIN A4 page with cups as with lprng, but still the
letter head is slightly cut off above, because of the stupid page margins.
Changing the page margins with gtklp or kups as no effect at all, since it
does not affect the settings for the printable area (= ImageableArea A4/a4).

Therefore, these settings should be corrected to a more suitable default
value. Otherwise cups may not be a reasonable alternative for many users,
in spite of its numerous other advantages.

As per decision of the Debian CUPS maintenance team, we are hereby
closing bugs concerning release 1.1.4, as they are dating back from
over 6 years ago.

Since then, CUPS has evolved into 1.1.23 (present in Debian 3.1 Sarge)
and 1.2.x generations (present since Debian 4.0 Etch), so we feel that
the issue reported simply cannot be addressed anymore.

Feel free to reopen this bug if you feel that it was closed in error
and explain why.
