We have a HP ColorLaser 2840 (All-in-one printer). It used to work perfectly (as a scanner) through the network some time ago. Last time I tried to use it as a scanner, I had the same problem of device being stated as busy. We are using a Debian unstable on an Amd64 system (opteron).
