The patch caused other problems, mainly you couldn't print which is 
a reasonably importing thing for a print spooler.

I know, from other uses, that both nss and ldap had plenty of issues
and strange things that happen. It is highly likely that something in
those libraries is causeing this, as there does not appear to be
anything much different between the two versions of lprng.

You could try downloading and building 3.8.28dfsg.1-1 using your
etch setup, I suspect it is not going to work but at least then we
know it is a library problem.
