Bug#381266: cupsys: can't add new printers

When I try to add a new printer, PDF Printer (Virtual Printer) or
otherwise, then cups-driverd shows 100% CPU. In the error log I
see a bunch of lines like:

However, cups-driverd continues to chew CPU for a long time (>5 min) and
the printer doesn't get added. After so much waiting (cups 1.1 took
less than 5 sec to add a printer), I just kill cups-driverd and
restart cupsys.
What more diagnostic info can I provide?
