Upstream just released 1.6.7, so a NMU is probably a waste of time as I
should be uploading a new version (with the python fixes) soon.

Still, if anyone wants to NMU anyway, the rule stands:  do not switch from
python 2.3 to 2.4 unless you are extremely sure nothing will break (and I
want the analysis and rationale for the 2.3->2.4 switch in the NMU bug
report, please).
