Please test if the 0.9.7 sarge backport of hplip, available at
http://backports.org fixes your issue.

Since this bug is marked "moreinfo", I will close it if I don't hear
anything back in about 60 days, as my 2610 (which is the same engine of the
2710) is working fine with Sarge's default hplip.
