Another suggestion: this printer is a native PostScript printer (I installed one using CUPS at my old workplace), so you don't actually need Gutenprint at all. If you look on the install CD, there should be a PPD file (it might be in a Zip file, or just on the disc). If you copy that to /usr/share/cups/model, and reload CUPS (/etc/init.d/cupsys reload), you can modify the printer to use the native PostScript driver, which will be faster and give better quality for text and most graphics (except photos and gradients).
