Package: hplip
Version: 0.9.5-2ubuntu2

Overview: HP DJ855 printer installation on Ubuntu v5.10 did not work when using CUPS. Traced issue to hplip and cupsys startup sequence issues. Believe Ubuntu may source hplip package from Debian so want to share this defect with Debian development team. I will notify Ubuntu dev team separately.

Details: Installed both CUPS and hplip. In troubleshooting the printing problem, I found the following document on my system:

/usr/share/doc/hplip/hplip_readme,html

This document is authored by HP. In section 6, Installation, there is a Caveats subsection. Caveat #5 states "The HPLIP startup script must be executed before the CUPS startup script at boot time".

To confirm this was indeed the actual configuration, I opened the /etc/rc2.d folder on my machine where I found the following 2 init scripts:

S19cupsys
S19hplip

These were default settings resulting from the standard CUPS installation process and the standard hplip installation process.

In a normal boot sequence, S19hplip will load *subsequent* to S19cupsys, rather than *prior* to S19cupsys, resulting in unknown problems.

Recommended Action: Confirm with HP (david_suffield@hp.com) that the load process dependency identified in the README file is still valid. If so, modify hplip installation package to install a file into the /etc/rc2.d folder named S18hplip, rather than S19hplip.

If I can be of any assistance or provide additional information, please feel free to contact me.

thanks,

Blair

First things first: Debian is not Ubuntu, please report bugs of Ubuntu
packages to the Ubuntu bug tracking system. They will report back to Debian
if the bug is also present in Debian packages.

That said, I have verified that the Debian packages in unstable are NOT
subject to the above bug, as cupsys installs at sequence 20 in Debian.

Also, I have verified that the cupsys/hplip load order is relatively
unimportant in the current packages (as it really should be, hplip reloads
cups when it is started in Debian). You could even have done this yourself.
Just stop both services, start CUPS, start hplip, and try printing. All
badness you will get is a message in the CUPS logs that can be ignored.

I am closing this bug.
