After some work with strace, discovered problem with hpssd to be caused
by not having a '127.0.0.1 localhost' entry in /etc/hosts. Last mod
time for that file was around a year ago; I have no idea how it got
changed, nor why things seemed to work since then. Anyway, I put the
entry back and hplip now starts and runs properly.
