I assume that these machines run the ppc64 port, not the 32-bit powerpc port, aren't they?

And I'm aware that these machines exist and certainly people are welcome to run Debian on
these. The question in the end is just how large is that userbase and does it justify
reducing the performance for the large number of Apple PowerMacs.

An alternative would certainly be to create a sepate AltiVec-variant of the packages
in question. At least mplayer does support runtime detection of hardware capabilities,
as far as I know,
