If I change the following in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf:

[ifupdown]
managed=false

into


[ifupdown]
managed=true

Networkmanager sees the ethernet device and shows that it is running fine.

Then you most likely have that ethernet interface configured in
/etc/network/interfaces
which is why network-manager ignores it.

If you want to be able to manage a network device with
network-manager, it must not
be mentioned anywhere below /etc/network/*.
