The ifconfig program hasn’t gone away completely.  It’s no longer installed by default, but it is available in the “net-tools” package.

To install it do:
    apt-get net-tools


Of course, it would be a good idea to read the man page for ip(8) sometime soon.  Lot’s more useful features, and it seems to be the wave of the future in network admin these days.
