You should be able to use the old images though:

That boots neatly and I am easily able to get remote expert install
going over ssh.  Whom ever invented that installer feature is my
personal hero.

I don't advise using expert mode. When installing a Ports architecture,
please only use the bare minimum standard installation. Everything else
is untested.

oops. too late. I am well into the process and the expert mode seems
to be working well. Other than mirror selection which has 'testing'
forced into the URL string. Should be 'sid' or 'experimental'.

Problem solved and install can not proceed *quickly* given that a mirror
somewhere will respect the architecture.

Server: http://ftp.ports.debian.org
Folder: debian-ports/

ps: odd that the kernel rev here is 4.16.x given that my upgrade from
the old Debian 8.10 upwards to buster/sid resulted in 4.19.x

That's because the kernel package comes the CD during installation,
not from the mirrors.

OKay.
